A staggering N512.10 billion has been spent by thirty-three state governments in Nigeria on Government Houses, Governors’ Offices, and travel expenses during the first half of 2026. This expenditure is approximately 4,713 times greater than the total salary of all 36 governors combined for the same period, highlighting a significant disparity between official salaries and the costs associated with maintaining executive offices.

According to an analysis of state budget implementation reports, the total salary for all governors over six months amounts to only N108.65 million, with each governor earning a stated monthly salary of N503,000. In contrast, the bulk of the spending, N420.01 billion, was attributed to Government Houses and executive administration, while N92.09 billion was allocated for travel and transport.

The figures indicate that the combined salary of governors constitutes a mere 0.02 percent of the total expenditure on executive offices and travel. This revelation comes amid ongoing discussions about the appropriateness of governors' salaries, particularly after Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, claimed that some senior civil servants earn more than state governors.

The analysis further reveals that the costs associated with maintaining the offices of governors extend far beyond their basic salaries. These expenses encompass a wide range of operational costs, including administrative functions, staff salaries, maintenance of official residences, security, utilities, and other necessary expenditures for running the executive arm of government. Travel and transport budgets cover both local and international official trips, further inflating the overall costs.

In terms of state-specific spending, Kogi State emerged as the highest spender, allocating N65.34 billion for its Government House and Governor’s Office, followed by Ogun State with N45.26 billion and Lagos State at N45.04 billion. Conversely, Oyo State reported the lowest expenditure at approximately N1.95 billion.

Comparative data from the first half of 2025 shows that the total expenditure for Government Houses and related offices was N465.07 billion, with travel and transport costs at N92.73 billion, resulting in a combined total of N557.80 billion. The recent analysis indicates a decline of about N45.70 billion, or 8.19 percent, in total spending from 2025 to 2026, primarily due to reduced costs in maintaining executive offices.

Despite the overall decrease, travel and transport expenses remained relatively stable, with only a slight decline of 0.69 percent. Development economist Aliyu Ilias commented on the findings, emphasizing that focusing solely on a governor's salary without considering the extensive costs associated with their office is misleading. He noted that the high costs of maintaining executive offices in Nigeria are a reflection of the influence political office holders have over budgeting and expenditure decisions.

As state governments continue to receive increased allocations from the Federation Account, scrutiny over how these funds are utilized is intensifying. The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) is currently reviewing the remuneration framework for governors and other political office holders, with proposed changes expected to be presented to the National Assembly soon.

This analysis underscores the urgent need for transparency and accountability in the management of public funds, particularly regarding the substantial costs incurred in maintaining the structures surrounding the offices of state governors. The ongoing debate raises critical questions about the true financial burden on taxpayers and the effectiveness of governance in delivering public services.
