The Osun State Government has officially welcomed its newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, amidst pressing demands for significant reforms within the state police command. Governor Ademola Adeleke emphasized the need for improved police conduct and the release of individuals he labeled as political detainees during a courtesy visit by Zungura and senior police officials.

Zungura, who began his tenure on Monday, expressed his commitment to restoring peace and public confidence in the police force. He assured the governor that he would prioritize impartial policing and collaborate closely with the state government to address security concerns. "I promise to work with the state government for peace and stability of the state. I will be fair to all, and I will prove my commitment in the next few weeks. Osun is a peaceful state, and we will work to address all outstanding issues," Zungura stated during the meeting.

Governor Adeleke highlighted ongoing tensions following the recent August 15 governorship election, which have strained relations between his administration and the police. He pointed out that peace in the state has not yet been fully restored, urging Zungura to take immediate steps to rebuild trust between the police and the community. The governor referenced a controversial police operation in Ikire, where two individuals reportedly lost their lives, and called for disciplinary action against the implicated Divisional Police Officer (DPO), labeling him a threat to public safety.

Adeleke outlined five key requests aimed at fostering a more effective police force. He urged Zungura to enhance public trust by ensuring that police officers operate in a professional and impartial manner. He also called for closer cooperation between the police command and the state government, insisting that his administration seeks no favors, only fair policing.

Additionally, the governor requested a reorganization of the police command's internal operations, particularly addressing units perceived as partisan or compromised. He expressed concern that certain police units are viewed as havens for political thugs associated with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Adeleke further emphasized the necessity for the police to actively participate in State Security Council meetings, noting that the previous commissioner had not attended such a meeting since 2024. He also demanded the release of members of the Accord Party, who he claimed are being unjustly detained for political reasons, and called for an immediate halt to further arrests of party members.

The governor reiterated his administration's readiness to support police operations without any political strings attached, stating, "What we seek is fair policing." Zungura's appointment follows the reassignment of the former Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, amid concerns regarding the neutrality of the police in the lead-up to the election.

In closing, Adeleke extended an olive branch to all stakeholders, asserting that Osun deserves a police command that commands the confidence of all citizens, irrespective of political affiliation. He stated, "Let us work together to heal our state, rebuild trust and give peace a permanent home in Osun."
