The Cross River State Police Command has apprehended two elderly men, aged 68 and 70, following allegations of attempted sexual assault on a 12-year-old girl in the Thomas Henshaw area of Calabar. The suspects, identified as Moris Monday and Asuquo Effiom, were taken into custody on August 23, 2026, after the victim's father reported the incidents to the authorities.

According to Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Eitokpah, preliminary investigations revealed that Monday allegedly lured the girl into his room on two occasions, August 13 and 14, with the intent to sexually assault her. Similarly, Effiom is accused of attempting to lure the minor into his room on August 22, 2026, for the same purpose.

After the complaint was lodged, police investigators acted swiftly, locating the suspects at the Hokins Road area near Thomas Henshaw Junction, where they were reportedly held by community members. The suspects were then taken into police custody for further questioning.

Eitokpah confirmed that both men have denied the allegations against them. He also noted that the victim has been referred to a government-approved medical facility for examination to ensure her well-being following the traumatic incidents.

The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, where a thorough investigation is underway. The police have assured the public that the matter will be handled with the utmost professionalism and in accordance with legal procedures.
