Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has stepped forward to clarify President Bola Tinubu’s recent remarks regarding the construction of flyovers by state governors. This clarification comes in response to earlier interpretations suggesting that the President had condemned such projects. Aiyedatiwa emphasized that Tinubu’s comments were not directed at the newly launched flyover project in Akure, the state capital.

During the flag-off ceremony for a 2.38-kilometre flyover on Oba Adesida Road, Aiyedatiwa stated that the President's call for governors to reconsider flyover constructions was aimed at areas with low traffic. He insisted that the project in Akure was essential for alleviating traffic congestion in a bustling part of the city. Aiyedatiwa remarked, “Let me quickly remind all of us, especially those naysayers that never see anything good in what we are doing. This is not the kind of location Mr. President was referring to when he said governors should stop building flyovers.”

The Governor further explained that Tinubu’s directive was contextual, indicating that flyovers should only be constructed where they are truly necessary. He reiterated that the Akure project meets this criterion, highlighting its importance in enhancing urban mobility and safety in the area.

Aiyedatiwa praised the President for implementing reforms that have significantly increased federal allocations to states, allowing for more comprehensive infrastructural development. He noted that states are now receiving four to five times their previous allocations from the Federation Account, which has enabled projects like the Akure flyover to move forward.

The Governor elaborated on the strategic significance of the flyover, describing the Oba Adesida axis as a major artery of Akure. This route serves as a hub for commercial, administrative, and social activities, connecting vital markets, financial institutions, educational establishments, and residential areas. Aiyedatiwa pointed out that the increasing population and commercial activities have led to severe traffic congestion, which poses risks to road safety and hampers economic productivity.

He stated, “A responsible government must therefore act decisively to remedy the situation, and that is exactly what we are doing right now.” Aiyedatiwa urged the contractor in charge of the project to adhere to the approved designs, budget, and timelines, ensuring that the flyover is completed to the highest standards of quality and safety for the benefit of the citizens of Ondo State.
