In a significant financial boost for Nigeria's state governments, the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) reported an unprecedented allocation of N3.007 trillion in July 2026. This marks the first time monthly allocations have surpassed the N3 trillion threshold, a windfall attributed to the removal of the petrol subsidy by President Bola Tinubu's administration. However, despite this surge in revenue, many Nigerians continue to grapple with increasing living costs and inadequate public services.

The allocation for July follows previous distributions of N2.551 trillion in June and N1.894 trillion in February, reflecting a dramatic increase in funds available to state governments. Over the first half of 2026, the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory received about N4.54 trillion, a 25.77% increase from the N3.61 trillion shared during the same period in 2025. Lagos led the states with the highest receipts, totaling N365.78 billion, followed by Rivers at N295.99 billion.

While some governors have pledged to utilize this increased revenue for developmental projects such as road construction, healthcare, and education, many citizens remain skeptical. Residents in various states report that the financial windfall has not translated into tangible improvements in their daily lives. Critics, including civil society groups and policy analysts, argue that the increase in allocations has not effectively addressed the pressing issues of poverty, unemployment, and inadequate public services.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has been vocal about the need for accountability, having previously sued state governors over their management of N14 trillion in fuel subsidy savings. SERAP contends that despite the surge in revenue, there has been little progress in enhancing essential services for the most vulnerable populations.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has also criticized the subsidy removal, claiming it has exacerbated economic hardships for Nigerians. He has promised to reverse the policy if elected in 2027. In response, the Presidency has defended the reforms, asserting that they have strengthened public finances.

Governors have adopted varied strategies in response to the increased FAAC allocations. For instance, in Osun, the government has focused on infrastructure, while Delta State has inaugurated new official quarters for permanent secretaries. In Kaduna, officials reported that the additional revenue has facilitated the clearance of pension arrears and the ongoing construction of over 115 road projects.

However, despite these claims of progress, many citizens express dissatisfaction with the lack of visible improvements. In Yobe, residents have noted that while the government lists numerous projects, the benefits have yet to reach ordinary households. Similarly, in Jigawa, locals report delayed salaries and poor road conditions, questioning the effectiveness of the increased allocations.

Analysts have raised concerns about the allocation of these funds, suggesting that while infrastructure development is crucial, there should be a balanced focus on basic services such as healthcare and education. Adebayo Abubakar, a policy analyst, emphasized that the true measure of the post-subsidy reforms should be whether these increased allocations lead to tangible improvements in the lives of Nigerians.

As the governors continue to receive higher FAAC allocations, the challenge remains for them to demonstrate that this financial windfall can translate into meaningful relief for the citizens they serve. The question now looms: will these unprecedented revenues lead to a better quality of life for Nigerians, or will they remain mere figures on paper?
