The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, as a public holiday in observance of Eid ul Mawlid, which commemorates the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad. This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Friday through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

In his statement, Minister Tunji-Ojo extended warm greetings to Muslims in Nigeria and around the world, emphasizing the importance of the occasion. He urged all Nigerians to reflect on the core values exemplified by the life of the Prophet Muhammad, which include compassion, humility, and service.

"Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others. These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them," Tunji-Ojo stated.

The Minister also called on citizens to use this festive occasion to pray for peace and national cohesion, reminding them that maintaining unity is a collective responsibility. He encouraged celebrations to be marked by restraint and mutual respect, wishing the Muslim community a joyous and peaceful Eid.

Furthermore, Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the commitment of the current administration to safeguarding lives and property while ensuring sustained peace across the nation. This declaration not only highlights the significance of Eid ul Mawlid but also serves as a reminder of the shared values that bind the diverse communities within Nigeria.
