The Nigerian Navy has pledged to enhance its operations aimed at combating piracy, oil theft, and other maritime crimes in Cross River State. This commitment was made by Rear Admiral Chiedozie Okehie, the Flag Officer Commanding the Eastern Naval Command, during the closing ceremony of the inaugural Intra-Command Maritime Tactical Live Firing Exercise, known as Exercise Littoral Fury, held recently in the state.

Okehie emphasized that the exercise was crucial for preparing naval personnel to effectively respond to maritime security threats. He noted that the unique challenges posed by the littoral environment necessitate specialized skills, effective communication, and seamless coordination among various security agencies. "The littoral environment presents unique operational challenges that require specialised skills, appropriate tactics, effective communication and seamless coordination among security agencies," he stated.

The exercise aimed to bolster joint responses among security agencies operating in maritime areas, highlighting the Navy's commitment to leveraging technology and intelligence in its operations. Rear Admiral Suleiman Ibrahim, representing the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, remarked that the exercise showcased the Navy's operational readiness and tactical capabilities. He noted that it was part of broader efforts to develop a modern and agile naval force capable of safeguarding Nigeria's maritime interests.

Ibrahim explained that the exercise allowed participating units, including gunboats and air assets, to test their weapon systems and improve inter-service communication. He stressed the importance of realistic training in maintaining maritime dominance, stating, "Rigorous training and realistic operational drills are not optional activities. They are the prize of maritime dominance."

The location of the exercise at Dayspring Island was significant, as it was once a stronghold for militants but is now under the Navy's control. Ibrahim highlighted that the Navy's presence in the area would enhance security for lives and property, thereby boosting commercial activities in the Calabar and Dayspring channels, including the waterways leading to Cameroon. He expressed optimism that improved security would foster confidence among residents and potentially increase revenue for the Federal Government.

The exercise also provided personnel with the opportunity to train with a variety of weapons, from 9mm pistols to automatic grenade launchers, simulating scenarios they might encounter during maritime patrols. Captain Mohammed Lawal commended the leadership of the Eastern Naval Command and the participating personnel for their successful execution of the exercise, which demonstrated tactical readiness and precision in marksmanship.

Lawal also acknowledged the contributions of sister services and local organizers, emphasizing the collaborative effort required to enhance maritime security in Nigeria. The successful conduct of Exercise Littoral Fury marks a significant step in the Navy's ongoing mission to ensure safety and security in the country's waters.
