IGP Disu warns against jungle justice, promises prosecution for offenders
Inspector-General of Police Tunde Disu has issued a stern warning against mob justice, emphasizing severe legal consequences for participants.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tunde Disu, has issued a strong warning regarding the dangers of mob justice, stating that anyone involved in such actions will face serious legal repercussions, including charges of murder. This directive was communicated to Commissioners of Police across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, urging them to treat incidents of mob action as homicide and to conduct thorough investigations using forensic and intelligence resources.
Disu emphasized that the legal implications of mob justice extend beyond those who physically carry out the attacks. Individuals who incite violence, mobilize crowds, film the incidents, or obstruct police intervention may also be held accountable under the law. He referenced specific sections of the Criminal and Penal Codes, including Sections 319 and 221 on murder, and Section 516 concerning conspiracy.
“Anybody who assaults or summarily executes a suspected criminal in the name of mob action is guilty of murder. There’s no exception,” Disu stated, reinforcing the police's commitment to tackling the issue of mob justice head-on.
This warning comes in the wake of increasing incidents of mob violence in Nigeria, notably the recent tragic killing of Ibrahim Mbaya, a 25-year-old graduate from the University of Jos, who was brutally attacked in Jos. The IGP's remarks highlight a growing concern within the police force regarding the rise of such vigilante actions and their implications for public safety and the rule of law.
Disu urged citizens to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead report suspected criminals to law enforcement agencies. He reassured the public that the police are equipped and committed to investigating crimes and ensuring that offenders are dealt with through proper legal channels.
The police chief's message is clear: mob justice undermines the legal system and poses a significant threat to societal order. By encouraging citizens to trust the police to handle criminal matters, Disu aims to restore faith in law enforcement and promote a culture of due process in addressing crime in Nigeria.
