In the wake of the 2026 governorship election in Osun State, the police have issued a strong reminder to political party supporters to celebrate responsibly and within legal boundaries. The Commissioner of Police for Elections, CP Samuel Erale Etaifo, conveyed this message in a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, on Sunday.

The police congratulated the citizens of Osun State on the successful conduct of the election and urged everyone to maintain peace during the celebrations that follow. Etaifo emphasized the importance of exercising restraint, particularly among those celebrating victories, and warned against any actions that could lead to injuries, property damage, or disruptions to traffic.

While acknowledging the right of citizens to celebrate and express their joy, the police stressed that such activities must not compromise public safety or security. They cautioned against reckless behaviors, including driving under the influence, discharging firearms or fireworks, and engaging in violent street demonstrations. The police also highlighted the importance of avoiding provocations towards political opponents during this sensitive period.

"Anyone found taking advantage of the post-election period to commit crimes or cause public disorder will be arrested and made to face the full weight of the law," the police stated, reinforcing their commitment to maintaining order.

In addition to their warnings, the police called upon parents, guardians, political leaders, and community figures to guide their followers in ensuring that celebrations remain peaceful and orderly. They noted that strategic deployments of police and other security agencies have been made across the state to uphold law and order during this post-election phase.

The Osun State Police Command reassured residents that their safety is a top priority and encouraged citizens to show mutual respect, reminding them that no political victory is worth the loss of life or property.
