Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress in 2027, has urged the Federal Government to take urgent action to protect lives and property in the wake of recent violent attacks in Benue State. His appeal came during a visit to the affected communities of Otukpo-Nobi and Efeyi-Ugboju in Otukpo Local Government Area, where numerous residents have suffered devastating losses.
During his visit, Obi highlighted the tragic impact of the violence, reporting that over ten individuals were either killed or went missing in Otukpo-Nobi, while more than thirteen fatalities were recorded in Efeyi-Ugboju. The situation has left many others injured, prompting Obi to visit local hospitals to offer support and prayers for the quick recovery of those affected.
Obi's visit was marked by a somber moment as he participated in a mass burial for the victims. He expressed his condolences to the grieving communities and emphasized the need for the government to fulfill its primary duty of ensuring the security and welfare of its citizens. "When government fails in this responsibility, as it has with the people of Otukpo-Nobi, Efeyi-Ugboju, and other troubled communities, it must be reminded of that sacred obligation," he stated.
The violence in Benue State has escalated recently, with reports indicating that on Thursday night, gunmen abducted 14 passengers from an 18-seater bus along the Ankpechi–Omutele route in Ohimini Local Government Area. The police confirmed that five victims, including a young child, were rescued, but nine individuals remain unaccounted for.
Obi's call for action comes in the context of ongoing insecurity in the region, where armed herders have been implicated in numerous attacks. In early July, 16 people were reportedly killed by suspected armed herders in Nobi, and later that month, a similar attack in Efeyi resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals. These incidents have raised serious concerns about the safety of residents in Benue State.
As Obi concluded his visit, he reiterated his plea for the government to enhance security measures and address the ungoverned spaces that have become hotspots for criminal activities. He prayed for the souls of the deceased, saying, "May the souls of the departed continue to rest in perfect peace. Amen." His visit underscores the urgent need for government intervention in safeguarding vulnerable communities across Nigeria.
