The terrorist organization Ansaru has publicly claimed responsibility for the assassination of Islamic cleric Yahaya Masussuka, who was shot dead on October 26 in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State. In a nine-minute video released on November 2, a masked member of the group provided a theological justification for the killing, framing it as part of a broader religious struggle against perceived threats to Islam.

In the video, the speaker, dressed in military camouflage and seated in a wooded area, referenced historical Islamic precedents to rationalize the assassination. He cited the execution of Ka'b al-Ashraf, a Jewish poet from Medina, as a comparable incident, arguing that Masussuka's teachings were detrimental to Islam and its followers. The speaker also echoed sentiments from the Islamic scholar Ibn Qayyim, suggesting that such actions were historically sanctioned.

Masussuka, known for his Quran-only theological stance and advocacy for interfaith dialogue, had become a controversial figure within Islamic circles in northern Nigeria. His approach led many to label him as part of the 'Quraniyun' sect, which has faced criticism from more traditional Islamic groups. Ansaru's video characterized him as a member of the 'Kala-kato or Quraniyun' sect, further justifying their actions against him.

The cleric's assassination has sparked significant controversy, with his supporters rejecting Ansaru's claims and instead pointing fingers at the Izala movement, a Sunni Islamic organization that has had theological disputes with Masussuka. The Izala movement condemned the killing and denied any involvement, emphasizing their commitment to peaceful discourse.

Ansaru's justification for the killing highlights a troubling trend in northern Nigeria, where violence against individuals accused of blasphemy has become increasingly common. The group criticized the Nigerian government for its inaction in holding accountable those who allegedly disparage the Prophet Muhammad, asserting that they could not rely on what they termed an 'apostate state' to defend Islam.

The police in Katsina State have yet to confirm Ansaru's claims and are continuing their investigation into the incident. As the situation unfolds, the implications of this assassination on interfaith relations and the broader security landscape in Nigeria remain to be seen.
