Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that a return to war would serve no beneficial purpose for any party involved, following reported US military strikes on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. The comments came just hours after the strikes, which were described by various media outlets as defensive in nature. This escalation occurs as the United States approaches midterm elections, a time marked by public dissatisfaction with ongoing conflicts and rising inflation.

In a statement, Pezeshkian emphasized the need for dialogue to resolve the tensions, asserting that the Iranian government is committed to finding peaceful solutions. He noted that Iran's Supreme Leader has recently granted the government new powers to negotiate on matters that were previously considered off-limits.

The strikes on Qeshm Island, a significant location in the ongoing conflict, were reported by major news organizations including The Wall Street Journal, CNN, and The New York Times. Unnamed US officials indicated that these attacks were part of a broader strategy to maintain regional stability. However, the Iranian government has reacted strongly, with officials asserting their readiness for conflict if necessary. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran's chief negotiator, stated that the country is prepared for battle, while Kazem Gharibabadi, the deputy foreign minister, reaffirmed Iran's right to self-defense.

Despite the military actions, there are ongoing efforts to negotiate a settlement. Qatar, acting as a mediator, expressed optimism about the possibility of an interim deal between the US and Iran. Majed Al Ansari, a spokesman for Qatar's foreign ministry, mentioned that both parties are reviewing proposals and remain committed to the negotiation process. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that indirect negotiations are ongoing, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

US Vice President JD Vance also expressed cautious optimism about reaching an agreement, noting progress in discussions. Meanwhile, Iranian officials have indicated their willingness to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global oil and gas supplies, contingent upon the US meeting a list of demands that include ending the conflict and lifting sanctions.

As tensions escalate, President Trump has maintained a tough stance against Iran, suggesting that the US may need to take further military action. This rhetoric has been met with warnings from Iranian officials about potential retaliation. In a symbolic gesture, authorities in Tehran have displayed a large billboard featuring Trump with a threatening message, underscoring the high stakes involved in the current standoff.

The situation remains fluid, with both sides seemingly caught between the desire for resolution and the risks of further escalation. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether diplomatic efforts can prevail over military confrontation.
