Russian Strikes on Ukrainian School Leave 26 Dead Amid Ceasefire Collapse
A deadly attack by Russian forces on a school in Zaporizhzhia kills 26 civilians collecting aid.

In a tragic escalation of violence, at least 26 people were killed when Russian forces targeted a school in Ukraine's southern Zaporizhzhia region. The incident occurred on Monday, shortly after a ceasefire that had allowed humanitarian operations expired, raising serious concerns about the ongoing conflict and the prospects for peace in the region.
Ukrainian authorities reported that the attack took place as civilians were gathering at the school to collect humanitarian supplies. This facility had been a crucial point for aid distribution, particularly on Mondays, when residents would receive their regular weekly assistance. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strikes, stating that the first aerial bombardment hit just as people arrived, followed by a second wave targeting the shelter where they sought refuge.
The ceasefire, which was brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump, was the longest observed since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. It lasted from Tuesday until Sunday, with no reported violations from either side during this period. However, the fragile truce came to an abrupt end, and within hours, Russian forces resumed their attacks in the southern Kherson region, culminating in the devastating strikes in Zaporizhzhia.
Acting regional governor Mykhailo Semikin confirmed the fatalities, noting that among the deceased were two rescue workers and four police officers. The emergency services identified the rescue workers as Denys Konovalenko and Oleksy Sushchevsky, both aged 44, who had dedicated their lives to helping others in perilous conditions.
Videos from the scene depicted the school reduced to rubble, with rescue teams sifting through the debris in search of survivors. Zelensky emphasized the significance of the ceasefire, suggesting it had provided a glimmer of hope for peace. He expressed that the recent violence contradicted any efforts towards a peaceful resolution, stating, "With these killings, Russia is sending an entirely opposite signal: Russia is counting on more killings. There must be a response to this."
The attack has reignited fears over the safety of civilians in conflict zones and the potential for further escalation in hostilities. As the situation develops, the international community watches closely, hoping for a return to dialogue and a cessation of violence that has plagued Ukraine for over a year.
