Venezuelan military strikes Colombian rebel camp, leaving 19 dead
A military operation in Venezuela targets an ELN camp, resulting in significant casualties.

In a significant military operation, Venezuelan forces attacked a camp belonging to the Colombian rebel group, the National Liberation Army (ELN), in Apure State, western Venezuela, resulting in the deaths of at least 19 individuals. This operation, which occurred on Friday morning, involved the use of drones and attack helicopters, marking a notable escalation in military tactics in the region.
Reports from military sources indicate that the majority of the casualties were Venezuelan nationals. Initially, nine deaths were confirmed, but this number rose after 10 additional bodies were discovered and transported to San Fernando the following day. Human rights organizations, including Fundaredes, are monitoring the situation closely, as the implications of this attack unfold.
Juan Francisco Garcia, coordinator of Fundaredes, highlighted the tragic loss of life in this operation, which has drawn attention to the ongoing violence in the border area. A military source, speaking anonymously, claimed that the operation was conducted with support from United States intelligence agencies, including the CIA and FBI, although neither the US State Department nor the Venezuelan government had responded to these allegations at the time of reporting.
The 2,200-kilometre border between Venezuela and Colombia has become a hotspot for armed groups involved in various illegal activities, such as drug trafficking and smuggling. The ELN has emerged as one of the most formidable rebel organizations in Latin America following the 2016 peace agreement between Colombia's government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
Experts are interpreting this military action as indicative of a shift in Venezuela's security policy. Rocio San Miguel, a military affairs expert, noted that this operation could signal a new phase in Venezuela's approach to dealing with rebel groups. Military sources suggest that there are several other rebel camps still operating in the border region, and they have indicated that further operations to locate these camps will be conducted.
This offensive coincides with a broader regional context, as Colombia's newly elected far-right President, Abelardo de la Espriella, intensifies efforts against the ELN and other drug trafficking organizations. Colombia is collaborating with numerous Latin American and Caribbean countries in a US-led initiative aimed at combating drug trafficking and organized crime, which could further influence the dynamics of security in the region.
As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how both the Venezuelan and Colombian governments will respond to the ongoing challenges posed by armed groups along their shared border.
