Cleric criticizes Nigeria's culture of wealth accumulation at NUJ anniversary
Apostle Lawrence Achudume calls for a shift from glorifying ill-gotten wealth to fostering creativity.

Apostle Lawrence Achudume, Senior Pastor of Victory Life Bible Church International, has voiced strong criticism of Nigeria's political culture, highlighting the detrimental impact of celebrating ill-gotten wealth on creativity and entrepreneurship. Speaking at the thanksgiving service marking the 50th anniversary of the Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Abeokuta, Achudume emphasized that the perception of politics as a shortcut to wealth is stifling innovation and discouraging talented individuals from contributing to national development.
Achudume expressed his concern that individuals who amass wealth through dubious political means often receive accolades instead of facing accountability. He argued that Nigeria requires more individuals who can leverage their talents and creativity to address societal challenges, establish businesses, and inspire others, rather than relying on political power for personal gain.
The cleric also addressed the declining standards of societal values, particularly criticizing the promotion of indecent dressing and nudity in the name of entertainment and fashion. "They celebrate emptiness and call it showbiz. They celebrate nakedness and call it fashion," he stated, calling for a return to responsible choices and positive societal influences.
In addition, Achudume highlighted the growing trend of measuring personal worth by social media popularity, urging Nigerians to resist such superficial metrics and pursue lives defined by purpose and meaningful contributions to society. He encouraged Christians to cultivate a strong relationship with God to navigate life's inevitable challenges, emphasizing the importance of steadfastness during difficult times.
During the event, Wale Olanrewaju, Chairman of the Ogun State NUJ, praised Achudume for his unwavering support for journalism and his broader contributions to society. Olanrewaju described him as a social crusader who actively challenges government actions and highlights pressing issues. He noted that Achudume's commitment to supporting the journalism profession has earned him significant respect among media practitioners.
In recognition of his impactful contributions, Achudume was awarded the Ogun NUJ Golden Jubilee Ambassador Award during the thanksgiving service, further solidifying his role as a key figure in advocating for positive change in Nigeria.
