Barrister Peter Agubuzu, a prominent figure in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has strongly criticized Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, for his comments regarding the Igbo presidency. Kalu had suggested that the Igbo community should not expect to wait 60 years for a four-year presidential term, referencing the recent discussions among South-East stakeholders advocating for a single-term presidency.

Kalu made his remarks during an All Progressives Congress (APC) Women’s rally in Enugu, where he addressed the notion that Peter Obi, the NDC presidential candidate, would only serve one term if elected. He implied that such discussions were unrealistic and misplaced.

In a swift response, Agubuzu dismissed Kalu's comments as “misplaced” and urged him to focus on the pressing economic challenges facing Nigerians. He highlighted that the current sentiment among the populace revolves around economic survival rather than the speculative debate of a 60-year wait for an Igbo president.

Agubuzu stated, “While Nigerians across the country are chanting ‘Tinubu Must Go’ because of the economic hardship they are experiencing and their fear of a worsening economic crisis if Tinubu is re-elected, our brother, the Deputy Speaker is talking about 60 years.” He emphasized that Obi’s primary goal is to transform Nigeria’s economy from one of consumption to production, aiming to alleviate poverty for millions.

The NDC chieftain further articulated that the urgent issues at hand are centered on the survival and livelihoods of ordinary Nigerians, particularly in light of the rising cost of living. He expressed that the focus should be on addressing these economic hardships rather than engaging in debates about political representation based on regional entitlement.

Agubuzu also pointed out that the discussions surrounding a single presidential term should be framed within the context of national unity, equity, and political inclusion. He called on political leaders to prioritize the concerns of the citizens and seek effective solutions to the economic difficulties plaguing the nation.

As the 2027 elections approach, the discourse surrounding leadership and economic stability continues to be a pivotal theme, with many Nigerians looking for candidates who can genuinely address their needs and aspirations. Agubuzu's remarks reflect a growing frustration among the electorate towards political rhetoric that seems disconnected from their day-to-day realities.
