Trump agrees to facilitate visa for mother of Ghanaian teen shot in New York
US President Donald Trump will assist in granting a visa to the mother of Javits Frimpong, a Ghanaian teenager killed in New York.

In a significant development following the tragic shooting of a Ghanaian teenager in New York, US President Donald Trump has agreed to facilitate the issuance of a visa for the boy's mother. The announcement was made by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who confirmed the arrangement on Saturday. This decision comes in the wake of widespread calls for justice after 15-year-old Javits Frimpong was shot while walking to school in the Bronx.
Javits Frimpong was fatally shot in the abdomen early in the morning, prompting immediate action from law enforcement who rushed him to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The teenager had recently relocated from Ghana in October 2025 to join his father, Thomas Frimpong, with aspirations of pursuing his education and becoming a medical doctor.
Mayor Mamdani expressed deep sympathy for the family, stating, "The murder of a child is a pain no parent should have to endure, let alone from thousands of miles away." He revealed that Trump assured him during a telephone conversation that he would expedite the visa process for Doris Gyamfi, Javits's mother, who lives in Kumasi, Ghana. However, as of Saturday evening, the White House had not yet confirmed the visa arrangement, and it remains unclear whether it has been issued.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Ghanaian government has been actively involved, with Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa reaching out to the grieving family to offer condolences on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama. Ablakwa assured the family of the government's support and commitment to pursuing justice. He stated, "We will pursue justice, and we will make sure that those who did this do not get away with it."
The Ghanaian community in New York has rallied in support of the Frimpong family, holding vigils to mourn the loss of the young boy and to demand justice. Bronx Congressman Ritchie Torres also expressed his condolences, highlighting the collective grief felt across the borough. The New York City Department of Education has extended its sympathies and pledged to cooperate with ongoing investigations into the shooting.
While two students at DreamYard Preparatory School were suspended following complaints of bullying made by Frimpong, police have not established any connection between the bullying and the shooting incident. Investigators are currently searching for three teenage suspects involved in the case, but no arrests have been made as authorities continue to probe the motive behind the tragic event.
In a show of solidarity, the Ghanaian government has pledged to cover the costs associated with Doris Gyamfi's travel and assist with the visa process, as well as contribute to the funeral expenses. The cooperation between Ghana and the United States in this matter has been welcomed by Minister Ablakwa, who expressed gratitude for Trump's intervention in facilitating the visa for the grieving mother.
