Residents of Lagos Island have expressed deep disappointment with the federal government’s neglect since President Bola Tinubu took office in 2023. During a recent meeting, a group of family heads with longstanding ties to the island voiced their frustrations, highlighting the absence of meaningful development initiatives and support for the community.

The gathering, which included individuals whose families have roots on Lagos Island for over 200 years, was marked by a shared sentiment of betrayal. Many had hoped that Tinubu, a native of the island, would prioritize its development upon his election. However, nearly four years into his presidency, the community feels abandoned. One resident poignantly asked, "What contribution has been made to the development of Lagos Island by the Federal Government since Tinubu became President?" This question encapsulated the growing discontent among the islanders.

Further compounding their frustrations, residents pointed out that while the federal government has reportedly distributed N20,000 cash transfers to impoverished citizens across Nigeria, those living on Lagos Island have not seen similar assistance. The disparity has led to questions about whether the needs of the island's poor have been overlooked.

As the meeting progressed, it became clear that the attendees were not only concerned about immediate financial assistance but also about the broader neglect of essential services. Issues such as the lack of public water supply, exorbitant electricity bills from the Distribution Companies (DISCOs), and the absence of federal establishments on the island were raised. The residents emphasized that these challenges affect all demographics, regardless of age, education, or ethnicity, highlighting the island's diverse population.

In response to their grievances, the family heads announced plans to form the Association of Heads of Families in Lagos Island. This non-partisan organization aims to unify the voices of residents and advocate for their rights and needs. They believe that by presenting a united front, they can draw attention to their plight and influence government action. The association is expected to focus on critical issues affecting the community, including infrastructural development and social welfare.

The meeting concluded with a call for unity among the residents, emphasizing that collective action is essential for addressing their challenges. As one participant noted, "United we stand; divided we fall." The formation of this association may serve as a crucial step towards ensuring that the needs of Lagos Island are recognized and addressed by both state and federal governments.

As the residents of Lagos Island await tangible changes, their hopes rest on the new association's ability to amplify their concerns and advocate for necessary support from the government. The community remains resilient, determined to fight for their rights and improve their living conditions amidst ongoing neglect.
