Relief materials reach 610 flood victims in Jigawa one year after disaster
Relief materials provided to 610 flood victims in Jigawa as part of ongoing support efforts.

In a significant move to assist flood victims, the Jigawa State Government, in collaboration with the Federal Government, has distributed relief materials to 610 individuals affected by last year's devastating floods. This initiative, which took place at the Warwade camp for internally displaced persons in Dutse, coincided with the conclusion of the 2026 rainy season and marks the second phase of support for those impacted by the disaster.
The distribution was overseen by officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and representatives from various security agencies. Auwal Sankara, the Commissioner for Special Duties, highlighted the importance of the initiative, expressing gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his commitment to supporting the people of Jigawa State. He stated, "This delivery is a classical example of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s caring, love and compassion for the people of Jigawa State."
Sankara reflected on the initial response to the floods, which displaced numerous families, noting that SEMA acted swiftly to provide assistance shortly after the disaster struck. The first phase of support included over 11,000 bags of rice, beans, and maize, as well as cash and other essential food items. Agricultural inputs were also distributed to help residents regain their livelihoods and enhance food security.
The recent distribution targeted individuals who were verified as victims from the most affected communities, ensuring that those who missed out during the first round of aid received necessary support. Hannafi Yakubu, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, described the relief effort as timely and well-targeted. He emphasized that the initiative was not politically motivated, stating, "There is no politics in this. This is purely humanitarian assistance approved long ago to complement what the state already did."
The relief package provided during this second phase included 500 bags of 25kg rice, cartons of spaghetti, vegetable oil, mattresses, blankets, and essential farming equipment such as pumping machines and grinding machines. Additionally, cargo tricycles were included to aid in transportation and logistics for the beneficiaries.
Beneficiaries expressed their gratitude for the support received. Audu Garba from Auyo Local Government Area remarked, "We thank the Federal and Jigawa State Government. This rice and mattress will help my family greatly after what we lost." Fatima Sule from Hadejia shared her relief at receiving a sewing machine, stating, "I can now start my business again." Another beneficiary, Ibrahim Musa of Dutse, noted, "The pumping machine I received will help me return to my farm. We are grateful to President Tinubu and Governor Namadi."
The event was closely monitored by officials from various agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Red Cross, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the distribution process.
