Tenant injures landlord in Edo over dramatic rent hike dispute
A violent altercation in Benin City escalated from a rent dispute, leaving the landlord injured.

A tenant in Benin City, Edo State, has been accused of seriously injuring his landlord during a heated argument over a substantial rent increase. The incident, which has drawn significant attention online, occurred after the landlord attempted to raise the rent from ₦300,000 to ₦1 million.
The altercation reportedly began when the landlord confronted the tenant regarding tiling work that the tenant had completed in the apartment at his own expense. The tenant had undertaken the renovations to enhance the space for his business, but the landlord insisted on receiving additional payment for the improvements. This demand sparked a disagreement that escalated quickly.
In a video that surfaced on social media, the tenant admitted to injuring his landlord but claimed he acted in self-defense after being slapped by the landlord. "He slapped me first and out of my defence, I smashed his head. It wasn't intentional," the tenant stated. The confrontation resulted in the landlord sustaining serious head injuries, which have raised concerns about the safety of tenants and landlords alike in the region.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding rental agreements and property management in Nigeria, where disputes over rent and property conditions are not uncommon. The drastic increase in rent proposed by the landlord has also sparked discussions about affordability and tenant rights in the area.
As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how local authorities will respond to this violent incident and what measures will be taken to address the underlying issues that led to such a confrontation.
