UNILORIN graduate overcomes challenges to earn First Class in Anatomy after four JAMB attempts
Abolarinwa Gbenga's journey to a First Class degree in Anatomy at UNILORIN is inspiring, having faced multiple setbacks.

Abolarinwa Gbenga's academic journey is a testament to resilience and determination. After writing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination four times and spending five years waiting at home, he finally achieved his dream of attending the University of Ilorin, albeit in a different field than he initially desired.
Graduating from FEMA Schools in Minna as the second-best student in his class in July 2018, Gbenga scored an impressive 781 points, just three points shy of the top student. His aspiration was clear: to gain admission to study Medicine and Surgery at UNILORIN. However, the path to this goal proved to be much longer than he anticipated.
After multiple unsuccessful attempts to secure admission, Gbenga redirected his focus and applied to study Anatomy, motivated by the hope of later transferring to the Medicine and Surgery program. When he finally received his admission letter, he described the experience as pure joy. He officially matriculated on April 3, 2023.
Despite his initial plan to switch to Medicine, Gbenga faced another hurdle. During his second semester, he fell short in three courses, which prevented him from transferring. Rather than becoming disheartened, he made a conscious decision to fully embrace his Anatomy studies. He drew strength from his faith, citing scriptures from Romans 8:28 and Ecclesiastes 9:10 as guiding lights during this challenging period.
On September 5, 2026, the results were released, and Gbenga graduated with First Class Honours in Anatomy. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed gratitude for the growth and transformation he experienced along the way. "Looking back, I realise that what I once called a delay, God used as a process of growth, preparation, and transformation," he shared. "What I thought was a detour became part of my journey."
His inspiring story has resonated with many, prompting congratulations and encouragement from peers and followers on social media. Comments such as, "Congratulations, brother! Thank you for putting in the effort. Truly, 'All things work together for good to them that love God,'" highlight the positive impact of his journey.
Gbenga's experience serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance and faith in the face of adversity. His story not only inspires students facing similar challenges but also underscores the value of adapting to circumstances and making the most of opportunities that come their way.
