Lagos State Safety Commission urges caution among drivers during ember months
The Lagos State Safety Commission has launched a campaign to promote road safety as travel increases during ember months.

The Lagos State Safety Commission has issued a stern warning to motorists and commercial drivers, urging them to practice caution and avoid reckless driving during the ember months. This advisory comes as part of the 2026 Lagos Road Safety Week, aimed at addressing the heightened risk of road accidents associated with increased travel during this period.
Lanre Mojola, the Director-General of the commission, emphasized the importance of road safety during a recent road walk at Ikorodu Garage. Represented by Technical Adviser Seun Awojobi, Mojola stated that the campaign aims to deliver crucial safety messages directly to road users, thereby discouraging behaviors that could jeopardize lives and property.
Mojola noted that the initiative would extend beyond Ikorodu Garage to other busy areas, including Oshodi and Lagos Island, to maximize outreach. He highlighted the necessity of the campaign, particularly during the ember months, when travel spikes significantly, often leading to an increase in road crashes.
"The campaign seeks to encourage road users to demonstrate patience, exercise restraint, and observe safety precautions in their daily activities, especially during periods when increased travel and traffic pressure may heighten the risk of road accidents," he said.
The commission's proactive approach reflects its commitment to ensuring road safety is a continuous priority rather than a seasonal concern. Mojola urged all stakeholders—drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and transport operators—to remain vigilant and collaborate in preventing accidents that could have severe repercussions for families and communities.
Fekoya Emma, the Head of Operations for the Federal Road Safety Corps in Lagos, echoed these sentiments, calling for strict adherence to traffic regulations and heightened caution on the roads. She pointed out that many road risks could be mitigated if motorists consciously avoided actions that could endanger others.
The choice of Ikorodu Garage as the starting point for the campaign was strategic, as it serves as a major transport hub, providing an opportunity to reach a large number of commercial drivers and commuters directly. The campaign aims not only to raise awareness but also to foster safer driving practices across the state.
Todowede Festus, the Director of Safety Audit 2 at the commission, reiterated the agency's mandate to protect lives and property through safety promotion and public education. He stressed the need for ongoing public education and personal responsibility among all road users to effectively prevent accidents.
As the campaign progresses to Oshodi and Lagos Island, officials remain committed to spreading the message of road safety throughout Lagos’s busy transport corridors, encouraging motorists to prioritize safe driving and compliance with traffic rules.
