The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing local expertise in robotic surgery by offering scholarships to medical students. This development follows the launch of the Redeemers Health Village–RoboMed Robotic Academy, which aims to train 400 robotic specialists over the next two years.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the grand opening of the academy held in Redemption City, Ogun State. The initiative is part of the government's broader strategy to strengthen Nigeria's capacity for advanced surgical procedures and reduce dependence on foreign medical expertise.

In his speech, Dr. Alausa emphasized the importance of preparing Nigerian medical professionals for the future. He stated, "This occasion speaks directly to our responsibility to prepare Nigerians for the future of medicine and to build the capacity that will allow advanced clinical practice to flourish here at home." He expressed optimism that this initiative marks a significant turning point in Nigerian medical practice, allowing a new generation of surgeons to train locally without needing to travel abroad.

The academy, touted as the first of its kind in Nigeria, will provide training in robotic and robot-assisted surgery, ensuring that Nigerian surgeons receive world-class education within the country. Dr. Alausa responded positively to a request from the academy for government support, stating that the initiative would be integrated into the TETFund-funded Centre of Excellence, which will fully fund scholarships for participating students.

The Minister highlighted the government's commitment to medical education, noting that over N250 billion has been invested in the past two years to prepare medical professionals to meet the healthcare needs of Nigerians. He commended the partnership between Redeemers Health Village and RoboMed, asserting that it would lay a solid foundation for specialist training in Nigeria.

Dr. Adedamola Dada, the Chief Executive Officer of Redeemers Health Village, detailed the academy's objectives, emphasizing that it is designed not just to issue certificates but to provide comprehensive training certified by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. He mentioned that the academy has acquired two robots valued at $4 million, one for surgical services and the other for training purposes.

The training program will not only focus on surgeons but will also include operating-room personnel, biomedical engineers, product specialists, and administrators. Dr. Dada stated, "Our target is to produce 400 specialists in robotic surgery for the country over the next two years. The aim is for every part of this country to be able to conduct robotic surgery."

Prof. Obi Davies-Ekwenna, the Chief Executive Officer of RoboMed Global, reinforced the academy's mission to develop the necessary expertise to sustain and expand robotic surgery and other advanced medical technologies in Nigeria. He highlighted the importance of equipping healthcare professionals with the skills needed to deliver precise, minimally invasive surgical care, thereby contributing to surgical excellence in Nigeria and beyond.
