A tragic attack on Saturday in Ethiopia's Oromia state has resulted in the deaths of over 40 individuals, predominantly Orthodox Christians, according to reports from local residents and the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED). The incident, which occurred in the Shirka district—approximately 270 kilometers south of the capital, Addis Ababa—has raised serious concerns about the escalating violence against religious communities in the region.

The assault, attributed to an unidentified armed group, not only claimed the lives of at least 43 people but also left 18 others wounded. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the attack was particularly focused on Orthodox Christian churches and homes, suggesting a religious motive behind the violence. One resident, who chose to remain anonymous, recounted the harrowing loss of family members, stating, "My sister and uncle were killed, and several of my relatives were taken hostage in Chole ward of Shirka district."

Reports from various locals have varied on the death toll, with some estimating as high as 51 fatalities. ACLED noted that such attacks against Orthodox Christians have been on the rise since February 2023, highlighting a troubling trend of religiously motivated violence in a country already grappling with deep-seated ethnic tensions and insurgencies.

Ethiopia, home to a diverse population of around 40 million in Oromia alone, has witnessed a surge in conflict driven by ethnic and political grievances. The Oromo Liberation Front, the primary insurgent group in the state, has been implicated in various violent incidents, although it remains unclear if they were involved in this particular attack.

The state-run Ethiopia Human Rights Commission has acknowledged the situation but has not provided specific details regarding the incident. In the wake of the attack, a deacon from one of the affected churches expressed his shock and called upon the government to take immediate action to restore security. "We are deeply shocked by these tragic killings and are appealing to the government to intervene and restore security," he stated, emphasizing the urgent need for protection for vulnerable communities.

As the violence continues, many locals have sought refuge in nearby churches, fearing further attacks. The situation remains precarious as Ethiopia grapples with multiple internal conflicts, including recent heavy fighting in the northern Tigray state, which complicates the already challenging landscape of security and human rights in the country.
