Survivors recount horror as Taraba bandit attack claims 50 lives
Survivors report a tragic increase in fatalities following a bandit attack in Taraba State.

The death toll from a recent attack by armed bandits in Taraba State has tragically risen to 50, according to survivors and reports from Amnesty International. The attack, which occurred shortly after Friday prayers in the community of Binnari, has left the region in mourning as more bodies have been discovered in the aftermath.
Survivors recounted harrowing details of the assault, with Bashir Mamuda Musa, a local resident, stating, "On Friday, we found seven bodies after the bandits attacked our community. The following day, Saturday, we discovered another 43 bodies in the river, bringing the total to 50." This grim discovery highlights the chaos that ensued as residents attempted to flee from the attackers.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that the gunmen, believed to be part of a notorious bandit gang, arrived on motorcycles and unleashed terror on the village, looting and setting shops ablaze. Abdullahi Zakari, another resident, described how many people, including women and children, fled towards the river in a desperate attempt to escape the violence. "Unfortunately, several people drowned while trying to flee the attack," he lamented.
Both the police and Amnesty International confirmed that some victims drowned while trying to escape the onslaught. Police spokesman Victor Msheliza stated that officers are continuing their search for bodies in the river and surrounding areas. He emphasized that additional police deployments have been sent to bolster security in the region following the attack.
Amnesty International has reported a slightly higher death toll of 52, asserting that the attackers came in large numbers and wreaked havoc on the community. Isa Sanusi, the director of Amnesty International Nigeria, criticized the Nigerian authorities for their failure to protect rural communities from such violent attacks. He stated, "The consistent failure of the authorities to bring the suspected perpetrators to justice is clearly emboldening impunity."
The rise of banditry in Nigeria, particularly in the northwest and central regions, has become a pressing issue. These criminal gangs, driven by profit rather than ideology, have targeted poorly policed rural areas, engaging in kidnappings for ransom and violent assaults on communities. The situation has been exacerbated by the lack of effective law enforcement in these remote areas, leaving residents vulnerable to repeated attacks.
As the community of Binnari grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, calls for increased security and accountability from the government are growing louder. The attack underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy to combat banditry and protect innocent lives in Nigeria's rural areas.
