Three secondary school students have been arrested in Ogun State for alleged involvement in a cult initiation ceremony.

The Ogun State Police Command has apprehended three secondary school students, aged 12 and 18, in connection with a suspected cult initiation event planned for the Owode-Yewa area. The arrests were made following intelligence reports regarding an event referred to as 'Kito Day', which was said to involve students from various schools in the region.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, the operation took place on October 22, 2026. The police received credible information about the gathering and acted swiftly to prevent any potential cult-related activities. Babaseyi confirmed that the arrested students would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Abeokuta for further investigation.
The police operation was executed in collaboration with the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, highlighting a community effort to combat cultism and related crimes among the youth. During the operation, several items believed to be linked to the planned initiation were recovered, although the police have not disclosed specific details about these items.
Cultism has been a growing concern in Nigeria, particularly among young people, with various reports indicating an increase in such activities in schools. The Ogun State Police Command's prompt action aims to deter the rise of cult-related violence and ensure the safety of students.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging parents and guardians to remain vigilant and monitor their children's activities, particularly in relation to peer groups and school events. The police have also called for community support in reporting any suspicious activities that may indicate cult involvement among youths.
The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by cultism in educational institutions, prompting calls for more robust measures to address the issue at both community and governmental levels.
