A tragic incident occurred in Ogoja, Cross River State, on Thursday when a stampede broke out during an empowerment programme organized by Mrs. Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, the wife of the state governor. The chaos led to the death of Mary Christiana Oga, a resident of Imaje in Yala Local Government Area, and left several others critically injured.

According to reports, the stampede happened as a large crowd gathered to receive various empowerment items, including food supplies. Eyewitnesses described a scene of panic as residents scrambled to secure the items, resulting in a surge that triggered the stampede. Emergency responders quickly transported the injured to the General Hospital in Ogoja, where Mary Christiana was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the fatality and stated that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is underway. Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, noted that officers were present during the event and responded to the unfolding situation. He reiterated the importance of proper crowd management and safety measures at public gatherings to prevent such tragedies.

As of last night, several victims were still receiving treatment at the hospital, with their conditions being monitored by medical staff. The police have not disclosed the exact number of injured individuals, but the community is rallying in support of those affected.

Officials from the Cross River State First Lady's office had not responded to inquiries regarding the incident at the time of this report. The event, intended to empower local residents, has now cast a shadow over its purpose, highlighting the need for better planning and safety protocols in future gatherings.

The loss of Mary Christiana Oga has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting calls for accountability and improved safety measures to ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future.
