Nollywood mourns the loss of veteran actor Francis Duru at 57
Francis Duru, a prominent figure in Nollywood, has passed away after a brief illness.

The Nigerian film industry is in mourning following the death of veteran actor Francis Duru, who passed away at the age of 57. His family announced the heartbreaking news on his official Instagram account on Friday, October 23, revealing that he succumbed to a brief illness.
In their statement, the family expressed their deep sorrow and requested prayers and understanding from fans and well-wishers during this difficult time. They acknowledged the support they have received, saying, "We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen."
Duru's death comes just months after he publicly addressed health rumors that circulated online in June. At that time, he dismissed claims of his deteriorating health as "fabricated and malicious," asserting that the footage depicting him in a frail state was misleading.
Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru moved to Nigeria to pursue his education. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Port Harcourt in 1996. His acting career began in 1989 with the film Missing Mark, but he gained widespread recognition in 1995 for his role as Ahanna in Amaka Igwe's critically acclaimed film Rattlesnake.
Throughout his illustrious career, Duru received numerous accolades, including the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the 2020 Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa. He married Adokiye in 2003, and together they had four children. The family faced a tragic loss in August 2024 when they lost their son, Ifeanyi.
Francis Duru leaves behind a rich legacy in Nollywood, remembered not only for his talent but also for his contributions to the industry over several decades. His passing marks a significant loss for fans and colleagues alike, who will remember him as a beloved figure in Nigerian cinema.
