During its 14th convocation, Afe Babalola University recognized two individuals with honorary doctorates while celebrating its largest graduating class.

Afe Babalola University (ABUAD) in Ado-Ekiti celebrated a significant milestone during its 14th convocation ceremony, where it graduated a record 2,194 students. This graduating class, comprising 1,759 undergraduates and 435 postgraduate students, is noted as the largest in the university's history.
The ceremony, held on Wednesday, also featured the conferral of honorary doctorate degrees to two distinguished individuals: Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, and Niyi Olajide, Chairman of Cavista Holdings. Okonkwo was honored for his impactful contributions to enterprise and functional education, while Olajide received recognition for his investments in healthcare, poverty alleviation, and women's empowerment.
In addition to the honors bestowed upon Okonkwo and Olajide, ABUAD's founder, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, was also celebrated as Western University in Canada and Trinity International University in the United States awarded him honorary doctorates for his extensive contributions to law, education, philanthropy, and public service.
During the event, ABUAD Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Smaranda Olarinde, commended the honorees for their dedication to societal development and economic growth. She emphasized the importance of education in fostering human welfare and expressed pride in the university's achievements.
Folasade Alli, SAN, representing the ABUAD Governing Council, took the opportunity to address the Federal Government, urging for the inclusion of private university students in the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund). She highlighted that the exclusion of these students constitutes a form of discrimination, as their parents are taxpayers and they deserve equal educational opportunities.
Following the award presentations, Okonkwo expressed his admiration for Babalola's vision in establishing ABUAD, noting its role in societal transformation. He announced plans for collaboration between United Nigeria Airlines and the university, focusing on skills development, technology transfer, and employment opportunities for graduates. This partnership is set to include scholarships, job placements, and an annual award for outstanding students.
Olajide echoed Okonkwo's sentiments, praising Babalola for his remarkable accomplishments and underscoring the potential for continued contributions to society, regardless of age. He reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing employment and entrepreneurial opportunities, encouraging successful business leaders to create job-generating enterprises.
In a heartfelt response to the honors from the foreign universities, Babalola expressed gratitude to their representatives for their visit to Nigeria, viewing the recognition as a significant source of encouragement for his ongoing efforts in education and public service.
