Nigerian food critic Opeyemi Famakin has stirred controversy by addressing Igbo social media users who he claims are deflecting discussions about counterfeit products by labeling them as tribalism or Igbophobia. In a recent video shared on social media, Famakin emphasized the severity of the counterfeit goods issue, stating that it affects all Nigerians regardless of their ethnic background.

Famakin specifically pointed out that Kano is a significant hub for counterfeit products in Nigeria, alleging that Igbo traders play a major role in this trade. He expressed frustration over the tendency to use tribalism as an excuse for the widespread problem of fake drinks, alcohol, and other consumables, which he insists pose serious health risks to everyone, including the Igbo community. "Are you guys not tired of using tribalism and Igbophobia? All of us are dying. All of us are dying from this fake products," he stated in the video.

The food critic clarified that his remarks were aimed at those involved in the production of counterfeit goods, rather than the entire Igbo population. He described the Igbo people as some of the kindest individuals he has met in his life, emphasizing that his criticism should not be misconstrued as an attack on their ethnicity.

In addition to addressing the issue of counterfeit products, Famakin also acknowledged the efforts of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in combating this growing problem. He noted that while the agency is making strides in tackling counterfeit goods, there is still room for improvement in their approach.

Famakin's comments have sparked a lively debate on social media, with many users weighing in on the sensitive topic of ethnicity and the impact of counterfeit products on public health. He urged Nigerians to unite in addressing the counterfeit goods crisis rather than allowing ethnic divisions to cloud the conversation.

As the discourse continues, it remains crucial for all stakeholders, including government agencies and the public, to work collaboratively towards eradicating counterfeit products from the market, ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens.
