Portugal has officially established a new income threshold for individuals wishing to apply for its long-term digital nomad visa. The announcement, made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, specifies that applicants must demonstrate average monthly earnings equivalent to at least four times the country's minimum wage over the last three months.

Currently, Portugal's minimum wage is set at €1,020 per month, which means that potential digital nomads must show proof of earnings of at least €4,080 monthly to qualify. This requirement applies to both employed and self-employed individuals, although the documentation needed to support their applications will differ based on their employment status.

For those in traditional employment, a valid work contract or a declaration from their employer confirming the employment relationship is required. On the other hand, self-employed applicants must provide one of three specific documents: a society contract, a contract for the provision of services, or a document that verifies services rendered to clients. In all cases, the income used to satisfy the financial requirement must be directly linked to these contractual agreements.

In addition to the income verification documents, all applicants must submit a completed application form, two recent passport-sized photographs, a valid travel document, and proof of travel insurance that covers medical expenses and potential repatriation. A certificate of criminal record from the applicant's home country or their country of residence for the past year is also mandatory, along with general proof of financial resources.

This new visa initiative is part of Portugal's effort to attract remote workers from around the globe, particularly from Africa and other regions, as countries continue to create tailored visa options for location-independent professionals. The digital nomad visa has garnered significant interest, reflecting a growing trend of individuals seeking flexibility in their work environments.

Furthermore, it is worth noting that Portugal's revised Foreigners' Law, which took effect on October 23, 2025, introduced a two-year residency requirement for most foreign nationals before they can apply for family reunification. However, there are specific exemptions for certain visa holders and families with children, allowing them to bypass this waiting period.

As the demand for remote work opportunities continues to rise, Portugal's new income threshold for digital nomad visa applicants represents a strategic move to position the country as a prime destination for global talent seeking a new place to live and work.
