The Ogun State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has made a strong appeal to the state government for an increase in healthcare funding to at least 15% of the annual budget. This call comes as the state gears up for the 2027 governorship election, with the NMA emphasizing the need for comprehensive healthcare plans from political candidates.

During a press briefing in Abeokuta, marking the 2026 Physicians’ Week, NMA Chairman Dr. Sunday Enimola highlighted the importance of prioritizing healthcare in political discussions. He stated that healthcare should not be viewed as a secondary issue but rather as a strategic investment in the state’s security and prosperity. Enimola pointed out that the current allocation of 13% from 2025 to 2026 falls short of the 15% minimum benchmark set by the federal government and should be improved upon.

The NMA outlined several key areas that require immediate attention, including primary healthcare, essential medicines, medical equipment, and healthcare infrastructure. Dr. Enimola stressed the necessity of recruiting and retaining qualified healthcare personnel, particularly in rural and underserved communities. He urged the incoming administration to develop a comprehensive healthcare workforce policy that addresses staffing shortages and enhances working conditions for medical professionals.

In addition to improving funding and workforce conditions, the NMA called for stronger public-private partnerships to enhance access to quality healthcare. Enimola noted that such collaborations should not compromise patient safety or professional standards. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of regular engagement between the government and healthcare professionals to address industrial concerns proactively, thereby preventing disruptions in healthcare services.

Addressing the safety of medical personnel, Enimola highlighted the need for the next administration to implement measures that protect healthcare workers from violence and harassment. He called for appropriate security arrangements in healthcare facilities, functional emergency protocols, and clear reporting procedures for incidents.

The association also advocated for enhanced primary healthcare services, including immunization, maternal and child healthcare, and disease surveillance. They urged the government to provide stronger financial and administrative support for the Ogun State Health Insurance Agency, particularly to benefit low-income households and vulnerable populations.

Moreover, the NMA proposed the adoption of a digital health strategy that includes electronic medical records and telemedicine to improve patient care and public health management. Enimola emphasized that collaboration among various stakeholders—government agencies, medical professionals, technology providers, and academic institutions—would be essential for the success of these digital initiatives.

In conclusion, Dr. Enimola reaffirmed the NMA’s commitment to working with the Ogun State Government, regardless of political affiliations, to enhance healthcare delivery and protect medical professionals. He urged political parties to provide clear, actionable plans that would lead to improved health outcomes and more efficient healthcare systems in the state.
