The Bauchi State Police Command has apprehended 17 individuals following a violent incident in Gobirawa Village, Alkaleri Local Government Area, that stemmed from allegations of witchcraft. The attack, which occurred in the early hours of October 18, 2026, was reportedly triggered by the death of 20-year-old Halilu Ahmad two days earlier, on October 16.

According to police reports, the suspects invaded the home of a 60-year-old man and his family, armed with machetes and sticks. During the assault, both the elderly man and his 30-year-old son sustained serious injuries. In addition to the physical violence, the attackers also vandalized two motorcycles belonging to the family.

Police spokesman SP Nafiu Habib confirmed that the victims were initially treated at General Hospital in Alkaleri before being transferred to Ihsan Hospital in Bauchi for more comprehensive care due to the severity of their injuries.

The police investigation revealed that the suspects believed the victim's son was responsible for Ahmad's death through witchcraft, prompting their violent actions. In light of these events, Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu has condemned the accusations of witchcraft and the resultant violence, urging the community to refrain from such superstitions that can lead to unjust actions against innocent individuals.

Aliyu emphasized the importance of reporting grievances and suspicions to law enforcement rather than taking matters into their own hands, which could lead to further unrest and insecurity. He assured the public that the police would pursue justice in this case and would not tolerate any actions that threaten public peace.

The police have also indicated that they are actively seeking three additional suspects believed to be involved in the attack. This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding superstition-related violence in the region, prompting calls for greater community awareness and adherence to legal processes in addressing conflicts and allegations.
