A mother in North Carolina has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the tragic death of her 13-year-old daughter, who reportedly suffered from severe malnutrition. Kymberli Bowden, 45, was arrested after an autopsy revealed that her daughter, identified only as ZT, weighed a mere 35 pounds at the time of her death, which was attributed to acute necrotizing pneumonia and inanition, or extreme malnutrition.

Authorities discovered ZT's body in Bowden's home on October 14, 2025, approximately two days after she had died. The medical examiner described the girl as extremely emaciated, with matted and dirty hair, a gaunt face, and sunken eyes. Court documents indicated that ZT typically weighed between 63 and 65 pounds, highlighting the severe neglect she endured.

The investigation began when family members expressed concern for ZT's well-being, stating they had not seen her in months. Upon arrival, police also found ZT's twin brother alive in the home, although he was living in similarly dire conditions without proper nutrition or sanitation. Reports indicate that he has suffered serious psychological harm due to the circumstances.

Neighbors had previously contacted law enforcement multiple times, expressing worries about the children’s welfare. Police reports described the interior of the home as cluttered with trash and rotten food, indicating a hazardous living environment.

Initially, Bowden faced charges of felony child abuse and concealing a death. However, following the autopsy results, the murder charge was added, and she could potentially face life in prison if convicted. Her next court appearance is scheduled for December, as the legal proceedings continue to unfold amidst the shocking details of this case.
