Rotimi Amaechi, the vice presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has openly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s recent decision to remove fuel subsidies, emphasizing the adverse effects on the Nigerian populace. Speaking at a town hall meeting in Calabar, Amaechi articulated his concerns regarding the lack of consultation with experts before implementing such a significant policy change.

During his address, the former Minister of Transportation and governor of Rivers State pointed out that the government should have engaged economists, political scientists, and other relevant stakeholders to assess the potential consequences of the subsidy removal. He argued that while bold policymaking is necessary, it must be accompanied by thorough planning and consideration of its impact on citizens’ lives.

Amaechi likened the situation to a moving train, suggesting that taking decisive action without adequate preparation could lead to serious risks. He raised critical questions about whether the current administration had sufficiently prioritized the welfare of Nigerians in its decision-making process.

The ADC leader highlighted the immediate repercussions of the subsidy removal, noting a significant rise in transportation costs and essential living expenses across the nation. He criticized the government's response to the escalating cost of living, calling for urgent measures to alleviate the economic strain on households.

In a further challenge to the administration, Amaechi expressed his willingness to engage in debates with members of the government’s economic team to discuss the implications of the subsidy removal and explore viable solutions to the resulting challenges.

Moreover, he reaffirmed the opposition's commitment to pursuing its agenda through democratic and constitutional means as the next election approaches. "The opposition intends to pursue the electoral process without resorting to post-election litigation, and we are confident in our approach," Amaechi stated, signaling a proactive stance against the ruling party's policies.

Amaechi's remarks come at a time when many Nigerians are grappling with the economic fallout from the subsidy removal, prompting calls for a reevaluation of government strategies to ensure the well-being of citizens amidst rising costs.
