Bauchi farmer-herder clash leaves one dead, four suspects arrested
A violent confrontation in Bauchi has resulted in the death of a farmer and the arrest of four suspects.

A tragic clash between farmers and herders in Guda Village, Ningi Local Government Area of Bauchi State, has led to the death of a 40-year-old farmer, Usman Jibrin, and the destruction of several homes. The incident, which occurred on September 23, 2026, was triggered when three farmers discovered herds of cattle grazing on their crops, causing significant damage.
According to the Bauchi State Police Command, the confrontation escalated after the farmers chased the cattle back to the herders’ settlement. An argument ensued, which quickly turned violent, resulting in injuries to the farmers involved. In retaliation, local youths from Guda Village set fire to houses in the herders' community.
Police officers from the Ningi Division responded promptly to restore order and ensured that the injured farmers were transported to the General Hospital Ningi for medical treatment. Unfortunately, despite the intervention, Jibrin succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.
In the aftermath of the violence, the police arrested four suspects on October 8, 2026, following intelligence-led operations. These individuals are currently facing serious charges, including criminal conspiracy, causing grievous hurt, mischief by fire, and culpable homicide. The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has ordered that the suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Bauchi for a comprehensive investigation.
In a statement, Commissioner Aliyu expressed his condolences to Jibrin's family and those who lost their homes in the incident. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and urged the communities involved to engage in dialogue to prevent further conflicts. The commissioner reassured residents that the police would not tolerate any form of lawlessness and promised that justice would be served in this case.
This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between farming and herding communities in Nigeria, often exacerbated by competition over land and resources. Authorities continue to call for peaceful coexistence to avert future clashes.
