According to the platform's description, Yetunde seeks to preserve and celebrate Yoruba heritage by fostering authentic relationships rooted in shared cultural identity and values.

The developers say the application is designed to create "timeless Yoruba love stories" while strengthening connections among members of the Yoruba community worldwide.

Awofisoye explained that the inspiration behind the platform came from the traditional Yoruba concept of "alarina", a trusted intermediary who historically helped facilitate relationships and marriage discussions between families and prospective couples.

"The idea behind the Yetunde app is pretty much the philosophy of using the old ways of doing things to solve modern-day problems," he told PUNCH.

"Back in the day, there was the Yoruba concept of alarina, which is an intermediary between a man and a woman. The alarina is someone who knows both parties and passes messages between them."

According to him, the application is designed to digitally replicate that traditional role by serving as a trusted bridge between individuals seeking compatible partners.

"The whole purpose of the app is to be the alarina between two people and try to match them based on community practices, knowledge and information about both parties," he explained.

He noted that, unlike many conventional dating platforms that rely heavily on endless profile browsing and swiping, Yetunde employs a culturally driven matching system designed to improve compatibility and increase the chances of successful relationships.

Awofisoye revealed that one of the key principles guiding the platform's matchmaking algorithm is the Yoruba philosophy of Omoluabi, a concept that emphasises good character, integrity, responsibility, respect, and moral excellence.

"You are being matched based on philosophies and principles, particularly Omoluabi, which is one of the core foundations upon which the algorithm is built," he said.

He added that the development team intends to continue refining the application through new features and improvements aimed at enhancing user experience, trust, safety, and matchmaking accuracy.

Unlike many global dating applications that emphasise casual interactions, the new platform is positioning itself as a relationship-focused service aimed at individuals interested in serious commitments, marriage, and family-building.

The launch also highlights the growing influence of technology in preserving cultural traditions by adapting long-standing social practices to modern digital environments.
