In a bid to promote environmental sustainability, the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Dobe Anambra Ocha has initiated a campaign aimed at educating residents of Anambra State on safer refuse disposal practices. This initiative, led by the group's Managing Director, Okafor Ernest Obinna, took place over the weekend in various refuse disposal hotspots across Awka, the state capital.

The campaign seeks to instill a sense of civic responsibility among residents regarding proper waste disposal. Obinna emphasized the critical need for community education on the negative impacts of improper refuse disposal, which poses significant threats to both the environment and public health. He pointed out that failure to manage waste correctly contributes to environmental degradation, leading to issues such as blocked drainage systems and increased flooding risks.

During the sensitization exercise, Obinna noted that the recent rainy season has highlighted the severe consequences of indiscriminate waste dumping, with debris frequently obstructing drainage channels and causing water to overflow onto roads. He identified common waste materials, including corn leaves, sachet-water plastics, and cartons, as significant contributors to these blockages.

Obinna stated, "Reducing indiscriminate dumping of refuse will significantly reduce flooding and erosion-related challenges across the state. If we stop dumping refuse inside gutters, 60 percent of erosion happening in Anambra will stop, and residents living in the state will have a fresh breath of air."

The NGO's efforts are aligned with the vision of the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, who aims to transform the state into a clean, green, and livable environment by 2070. Obinna reiterated the importance of adhering to designated waste disposal points to maintain clear drainage channels and mitigate flooding risks.

The sensitization campaign marks the initial phase of Dobe Anambra Ocha’s broader strategy to enhance environmental awareness and responsibility among residents. The group is committed to supporting the state’s development agenda by fostering a culture of environmental sustainability. Obinna called upon the people of Anambra to actively participate in this initiative, urging them to cooperate with local authorities in maintaining a clean and safe environment.

As the campaign progresses, Dobe Anambra Ocha aims to engage more residents and reinforce the message that proper waste disposal is not just a personal responsibility but a collective duty essential for the well-being of the community and the environment.
