A Nigerian doctor has shared a heart-wrenching account of losing his father after missing critical calls from his siblings due to his phone's 'Do Not Disturb' (DND) setting. The incident, which has sparked widespread sympathy online, highlights the tragic consequences of communication failures during emergencies.

In a video posted on TikTok by the user @drsmile72, the doctor explained that he had been caring for his father, who was seriously ill. He had been visiting regularly to administer medication and monitor his condition. However, on the day of the incident, he had not gone to work for over two weeks, attributing his absence to unpaid salaries from the Federal Government affecting his workplace.

As his father's health deteriorated, his siblings attempted to reach him multiple times, urgently trying to inform him that their father needed immediate medical attention. Unfortunately, the doctor was unaware of their calls because his phone was on DND, and he was asleep at the time.

The doctor recounted, "As at yesterday, his breathing was bad, he wasn't talking, he was totally down. So because it's the nanny normally takes care of him, I instructed them on what to be giving him. My sibling called me countless times, but my phone was on DND and wasn't ringing out. I was asleep. It was my alarm that woke me up, and that was how I saw so many missed calls and messages from my siblings."

Upon waking and discovering the missed calls, the doctor rushed to the hospital, only to find his father lifeless on the ground. Medical personnel later confirmed his father's death, leaving him devastated and grappling with the reality of what had transpired.

In addition to his personal grief, the doctor expressed frustration over the healthcare system, alleging that his father's lack of immediate attention was partly due to several doctors being unavailable because of unpaid salaries. This situation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by healthcare workers in Nigeria, where financial constraints often hinder timely medical care.

This tragic story has resonated with many, prompting discussions about the importance of communication during emergencies and the need for improvements in the healthcare system to prevent such heartbreaking incidents in the future.
