Zimbabwean businessman Munyaradzi Kereke dies at 54 after health decline
Munyaradzi Kereke, a former MP and adviser to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, has died at 54.

Munyaradzi Kereke, a prominent figure in Zimbabwe's financial sector and former Member of Parliament, passed away on October 6, 2026, at the age of 54. His family confirmed that he died in the early hours at The Avenues Clinic in Harare after battling health issues related to diabetes and high blood pressure.
Kereke had been admitted to the clinic on September 29, 2026, following a deterioration in his health, which some reports suggest may have been exacerbated by a stroke he suffered after his release from prison earlier in the year. His death has elicited a wave of tributes from various sectors, reflecting on his complex legacy.
A former strategic adviser to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, Kereke played a significant role during one of the most challenging periods in the country’s economic history. His influence in the financial sector was notable, particularly during his tenure under former Governor Gideon Gono. However, his career was marred by controversy, most notably a conviction for the abuse of a minor relative, which he received in 2016. The Supreme Court upheld this conviction in May 2024, leading to his imprisonment until January 2026.
In addition to his political and financial roles, Kereke was involved in various business ventures, including the establishment of Fortress Hospital and a funeral assurance company. He was also recognized for his efforts to improve healthcare access in his home area of Mupamaonde by setting up a local clinic.
Despite his contributions, Kereke's later years were overshadowed by legal troubles and allegations of corruption. After serving his sentence, he accused a Supreme Court judge of demanding a bribe in exchange for a favorable ruling regarding his conviction. This claim added to the controversy surrounding his already tumultuous life.
The news of Kereke’s passing has sparked varied reactions on social media. Journalist Hopewell Chin'ono remarked on Kereke's talents in banking and noted how his political career was significantly impacted by his legal issues. As tributes continue to pour in, Kereke's family has indicated that funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course, marking the end of a complex and often controversial chapter in Zimbabwe's recent history.
