Transformative Leadership of Oluwatosin Ajayi Earns Praise as DSS Chief
DSS Director-General Oluwatosin Ajayi commended for transformative leadership.

Oluwatosin Ajayi, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), has been hailed as Nigeria's most professional security chief, following significant improvements in the agency since he assumed leadership. Public affairs analyst Comrade Usman Okai Austin made this commendation in a recent statement, highlighting Ajayi's effective transformation of the DSS into a more intelligence-driven organization.
Austin praised Ajayi for steering the agency away from public confrontations and towards a focus on covert operations aimed at neutralizing security threats before they escalate. He noted that the DSS has enhanced its collaboration with the military, the Nigeria Police Force, and international security partners to effectively tackle cross-border threats. Furthermore, the incorporation of modern technology to combat digital threats and safeguard critical infrastructure has been a notable advancement under Ajayi’s tenure.
"Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi stands out as a thoroughbred professional security strategist," Austin stated. He emphasized that Ajayi's leadership has been pivotal in rebuilding public trust in the DSS by prioritizing intelligence gathering, operational discretion, and adherence to the rule of law.
In addition to operational improvements, Austin pointed out that Ajayi has made strides in enhancing staff welfare and officer training, while also putting an end to arbitrary arrests and detentions. These reforms have contributed to Ajayi's recognition both domestically and internationally, reinforcing the DSS's reputation as a premier intelligence agency.
Austin also stressed the importance of keeping politics separate from the DSS, arguing that effective security management relies on seasoned professionals rather than political appointees who may lack the necessary experience. He cited Ajayi's career progression within the agency as a testament to his qualifications and capability to lead.
"Ajayi rose through the ranks, and that background shows in his leadership," Austin remarked. He urged Ajayi to maintain the current trajectory, asserting that a disciplined and low-profile intelligence service is crucial for Nigeria's defense against internal security challenges.
Earlier, Ajayi had issued a directive to DSS operatives, instructing them to refrain from making arrests in civil matters, emphasizing that force should not be employed in such disputes. This directive aligns with his broader commitment to uphold the rule of law and enhance the agency's human rights record. Since taking office, Ajayi has focused on reforms across five key areas: law enforcement, inter-agency collaboration, accountability, human rights, and administrative efficiency, all aimed at bolstering the operational capabilities of the DSS.
