APC criticizes Amaechi over drug affordability claims amid drug busts and women's summit
The APC has mocked Rotimi Amaechi for his claims about medication costs for his late mother, while the NDLEA reports a major drug seizure.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has publicly criticized Rotimi Amaechi, the Vice Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, over his recent claims regarding the inability to afford medication for his deceased mother. The party's National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, stated that Amaechi, who served as the governor of Rivers State, has relied on public office for decades and described him as 'destitute' just three years after leaving office.
Morka's statement comes amid Amaechi's assertions that he struggled to pay for his mother's medical treatment, which has sparked a backlash from the APC. The party accused him of seeking the Vice Presidential ticket in the upcoming 2027 elections to continue his dependence on public funds, emphasizing that 'the presidency is not a soup kitchen' for individuals like Amaechi.
In a separate but significant development, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reported the interception of container consignments worth over N5 billion at various seaports, including Apapa, Tin Can Island, and Onne. The agency's operatives seized 161 parcels of a potent cannabis strain known as Loud, along with codeine-based syrup, following extensive intelligence operations. The NDLEA's Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, revealed that one of the containers contained 124kg of the drug concealed within refrigerators and cartons.
Additionally, Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is set to spearhead a major women’s mobilisation event in Abuja on Monday. This initiative, organized by the APC Presidential Campaign Council's Women Mobilisation Directorate, aims to gather over 20,000 women from across the nation as part of the party's grassroots campaign efforts leading up to the 2027 presidential elections. The event, themed 'Renewed Hope Agenda 2.0: From Reforms to Prosperity,' will take place at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre and is designed to unify women under the campaign message, 'One Voice, One Movement, One Choice, One Mandate 2027.'
In light of the current security situation, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has issued a warning against the spread of misinformation that could exacerbate insecurity in the country. During a recent event in Abuja, NSCDC Commandant Dr. Olusola Odumosu stressed the dangers of unverified information circulating on social media, which could incite panic and encourage criminal activities such as banditry and kidnapping. The NSCDC's warning highlights the critical need for responsible information sharing, especially in times of heightened insecurity.
As the political landscape heats up ahead of the 2027 elections, these developments reflect the ongoing tensions within Nigerian politics, with the APC positioning itself against perceived threats from opposition figures like Amaechi, while also addressing pressing issues of drug trafficking and public safety.
