In a pre-dawn airstrike on Saturday, Israel targeted a key Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of five individuals, four of whom were women. This strike coincided with the anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attack, which marked one of the deadliest days for Israel, prompting a significant military response against Hamas.

The Israeli military confirmed that the operation aimed to eliminate Ali al-Amoudi, described as the right-hand man to the slain Hamas chief, Yahya Sinwar. Al-Amoudi is believed to have been involved in orchestrating the October 7 attack, and Israel stated that it was monitoring whether he was killed or injured in the strike. The military justified the operation by claiming that Hamas was using civilian structures as shields, stating, "Steps were taken to mitigate harm to civilians, including the use of precise munitions."

Local officials reported that the airstrike hit an apartment building in the Rimal neighborhood, leading to significant destruction and a fire. Among the deceased were two women, Maysaa Abu Daoud, 56, and her daughter, Mary Al-Najjar, 36, both of whom were attending to their daily activities when the attack occurred. The hospital director indicated that two of the victims were Christians, highlighting the diverse demographic affected by the ongoing conflict.

Mourners gathered at the Greek Orthodox church of Saint Porphyrius in Gaza City to pay their respects to the victims. A relative of the deceased expressed outrage over the attack, stating, "We didn’t hurl stones or fire rockets. If any child among us carries a stone, they call him a terrorist, a murderer. But they possess the most powerful arsenal and destroy everything."

The airstrike comes amid a backdrop of heightened tensions following the October 7 attack, which resulted in the deaths of 1,221 people according to Israeli figures. In retaliation, Israel's military offensive has devastated much of Gaza, leading to over 74,200 fatalities as reported by Gaza's health ministry, which operates under Hamas authority. The humanitarian crisis in the region continues to escalate, with many civilians caught in the crossfire of the ongoing conflict.

Despite a US-brokered ceasefire declared a year ago, Israel has maintained its commitment to dismantling Hamas's operational capabilities. The military's actions reflect a broader strategy to target key figures within the organization, as exemplified by the previous killing of Yahya Sinwar in October 2024, which was viewed as a significant victory for Israel.

As the situation develops, the impact on the civilian population remains a pressing concern, with calls for accountability and protection of non-combatants amidst the ongoing hostilities.
