The governorship candidate for the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Ogun State, Rotimi Babajide, has raised concerns regarding the Federal Government's recent removal of fuel subsidies, stating that Nigerians have not seen any tangible benefits from the policy. Speaking to reporters in Abeokuta, Babajide highlighted the steep rise in petrol prices, which currently range between N1,400 and N1,500 per litre, without any corresponding improvement in living conditions for citizens.

Babajide expressed his frustration, stating, "The bottom line is subsidy, we are not seeing the dividend. We are buying fuel at 1,400, 1,500 right now. Nobody's enjoying it." His remarks underscore the growing dissatisfaction among Nigerians who are grappling with the economic implications of the subsidy removal.

In addition to his criticism of the subsidy policy, Babajide took issue with a recent comment made by a governor, who used the phrase "Are they mad?" while discussing the subsidy issue. He deemed the remark inappropriate for a public official, calling it derogatory and unbefitting of a leader.

Looking ahead to the 2027 gubernatorial elections, Babajide pledged to declare a state of emergency in Ogun State's education sector if elected. He described the current state of education as one of decline and retrogression, referencing the legacy of prominent educational figures such as Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Professor Wole Soyinka. Babajide emphasized that his approach would not involve force or restrictions but rather urgent government intervention to revitalize the education system.

He outlined plans to incorporate digital tools and modern facilities into the educational framework to enhance teaching and learning, ensuring that Ogun students can compete on an international level. Babajide cited the success of a Nigerian student in an international competition as evidence of the potential that exists when students receive adequate support.

Furthermore, Babajide indicated his intention to collaborate with former Ogun governors, including Otunba Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun, to leverage their experience for his administration. He expressed optimism about ongoing discussions with Daniel, recognizing the value of their expertise in shaping effective governance.

In a show of political solidarity, Babajide also voiced his support for Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, praising his leadership capabilities and the progress made under his administration in areas such as waste management and revenue generation. He dismissed concerns that Makinde's potential rise could jeopardize the South's aspirations for the presidency, suggesting that political parties could form coalitions to safeguard regional interests in the future.

As the political landscape evolves in Nigeria, Babajide's comments reflect the urgent need for effective governance and accountability, particularly in the face of economic challenges posed by subsidy removal.
