The remains of Patrick Odey, the Akwa Ibom Correspondent for The PUNCH, were interred in Mbube, Cross River State, on Saturday, marking a somber moment for the journalism community in Nigeria. Odey’s passing has left a significant void, with tributes pouring in from various quarters, including state officials and fellow journalists.

In a heartfelt condolence message, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno expressed his sorrow over Odey’s death, stating it was a profound loss not only for his family but also for the entire state. The governor's message, delivered by his Senior Special Assistant on Research and Documentation, Essien Ndueso, highlighted Odey’s invaluable contributions to journalism and the narrative of Akwa Ibom. "His contributions to journalism and our state will be remembered and will be greatly missed," Eno remarked, extending prayers for strength and comfort to those grieving.

Bassey Anthony, Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Akwa Ibom, also paid tribute to Odey. He described him as a peaceful and humble colleague who significantly promoted excellence within the field of journalism. Anthony noted that this was the second time in two years that the chapel had gathered to mourn a member, recalling the recent loss of Chioma Okonna, a correspondent for Vanguard Newspaper.

The funeral service saw participation from various dignitaries, including representatives from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Prof. Opeyemi Olajide, the chairman of the University of Uyo branch of ASUU, alongside National Financial Secretary Prof. Happiness Uduk, described Odey as a godly man whose life was worthy of celebration.

During the service, Rev. Offiong Eyo of Assemblies of God, Afaha Oku, delivered an exhortation urging attendees to live lives deserving of eternal reward. He emphasized the significance of death in the Christian faith, portraying it as a transition to a divine reward for those who have devoted their lives to serving God. Rev. Eyo offered prayers for comfort for Odey’s wife and children, reinforcing the communal support for the bereaved family.

Patrick Odey’s legacy as a journalist and his commitment to truth and integrity will be remembered by colleagues and the broader media community in Nigeria. His untimely passing serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by journalists in their pursuit of truth and accountability.
