Drones pinpoint location of abducted NYSC members in Imo State amid rescue challenges
Security forces have identified the location of abducted NYSC members but face major obstacles due to IEDs.

Security operatives in Imo State have successfully identified the location where suspected kidnappers are holding abducted members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and other victims. However, the rescue operation is currently hampered by the presence of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) surrounding the camp.
Imo State Police Commissioner Audu Garba Bosso confirmed that drones were deployed to track the kidnappers deep into the bush, leading to the acquisition of precise coordinates of the camp. The police commissioner stated, "Yesterday we were in the bush; we trailed them up to a particular location. But at that point in time, we couldn't move in to where the coordinates showed us where they are." He emphasized that the IEDs are the main obstacle preventing security forces from advancing to rescue the captives.
On October 1, gunmen abducted 20 passengers from two buses on the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway, including several prospective corps members heading to orientation camps in the South East and South South regions of Nigeria. The buses were reportedly attacked while traveling through the Umunoha axis in Mbaitoli Local Government Area. Following the attack, ten passengers were rescued shortly after the incident, with eight of them identified as prospective corps members.
In response to the challenges posed by the IEDs, Commissioner Bosso announced that security forces are preparing to deploy specialized machinery for the rescue operation. He stated, "We are moving in there with high-velocity vehicles. We are moving with bulldozers and APCs to see how we are going to rescue these victims." This indicates a significant escalation in the efforts to ensure the safe return of the abducted individuals.
A joint search and rescue operation is currently underway, involving troops from Operation Udoka, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Department of State Services, with air support from the Nigerian Air Force. The operation remains active as authorities continue to work towards reaching the remaining victims safely.
The incident has raised concerns among families and the public, particularly following a distress message sent by Kehinde, a twin daughter of a mother who has appealed for help after losing contact with her. The attack on the buses has highlighted the ongoing security challenges in the region, especially regarding the safety of travelers and students.
As the situation develops, the authorities are under pressure to act swiftly and effectively to ensure the safe recovery of the abducted NYSC members and other victims, while also addressing the broader issues of security and safety on Nigeria's roads.
