The Coca-Cola System in Nigeria has made a remarkable contribution to the nation's economy, generating $1 billion in value-added economic activity during 2024. This finding is part of a comprehensive Socio-Economic Impact Assessment conducted by the global consultancy Steward Redqueen, which highlights the extensive reach of Coca-Cola's operations in the country.

According to the report, the Coca-Cola System, which includes Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited and its authorized bottler, the Nigerian Bottling Company, supported approximately 160,200 jobs across various sectors. This figure encompasses 2,989 direct employees and over 157,200 indirect jobs in industries such as agriculture, logistics, retail, hospitality, and distribution. The study underscores the significant multiplier effect of Coca-Cola's operations, revealing that for every direct job created, an additional 53 jobs were sustained elsewhere in the economy.

The assessment also noted that the Coca-Cola System invested about $601 million annually on goods and services sourced from local suppliers. This commitment to domestic procurement has bolstered economic activity and deepened the company's integration into Nigeria's agricultural, manufacturing, and logistics sectors. By sourcing a substantial portion of its ingredients, packaging materials, and production inputs locally, Coca-Cola has extended economic opportunities to numerous businesses and individuals throughout the country.

In addition to its economic contributions, the report emphasized Coca-Cola's initiatives in environmental sustainability and community development. The company recently launched a packaging collection hub in Apapa, Lagos, designed to process 13,000 metric tonnes of PET plastic each year. This facility is expected to support around 1,000 informal waste collectors, thereby enhancing Nigeria's recycling ecosystem and improving plastic recovery efforts.

Coca-Cola's commitment to water sustainability was also highlighted, with a $25 million Africa-wide water stewardship initiative that spans 20 markets, including Nigeria. Communities in Borno and Imo states have already benefited from various projects aimed at improving access to clean water, sanitation infrastructure, and riverbank restoration, impacting over 2.6 million people.

The report concludes that the Coca-Cola System’s influence extends well beyond beverage production, encompassing job creation, local sourcing, environmental initiatives, and community development. It emphasizes the importance of aligning global expertise with local ambitions to enhance the company's impact, strengthen supply chains, and create broader economic opportunities for Nigerians.

Looking ahead, Coca-Cola has announced plans to invest an additional $1 billion in Nigeria over the next five years, contingent upon a favorable and stable policy environment, further solidifying its commitment to the Nigerian market.
