NOA calls for unity and responsibility as Nigeria celebrates 66th Independence Day
As Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary, the NOA emphasizes citizen involvement in national development.

As Nigeria commemorates its 66th Independence Anniversary, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has issued a call for citizens to take an active role in fostering national development and unity. The message was conveyed by Paul Odenyi, the Deputy Director of Communication and Media at NOA, on behalf of the Director-General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu.
Issa-Onilu highlighted the significance of Nigeria's independence from colonial rule, describing it as a pivotal moment that empowered Nigerians to shape their own destiny. He urged citizens to reflect on the progress made since independence while acknowledging the challenges that still lie ahead. "We must continue to hold on to the gains of our independence by taking responsibility for the Nigeria we want," he stated.
The Director-General emphasized that the advancement of the nation relies not solely on government initiatives but also on the contributions of individual citizens. He called for increased participation and cooperation among Nigerians to support ongoing national development efforts.
In light of the upcoming 2027 general elections, Issa-Onilu urged citizens to safeguard the nation's peace and unity. He stressed the importance of respecting political differences, rejecting hate speech and violence, and resolving disputes through lawful and democratic means. According to him, political rivalry should not erode the bonds that unite Nigerians, and citizens should engage in constructive dialogue while respecting diverse opinions and upholding the rule of law.
Issa-Onilu also addressed the responsibilities of citizens beyond the independence celebrations. He called for a commitment to increased productivity, self-reliance, and responsible citizenship. He reiterated that every Nigerian plays a crucial role in building a stronger nation through positive contributions to their communities and adherence to national values.
The NOA is committed to fostering patriotism, national unity, and responsible citizenship by providing citizens with accurate information on government policies and encouraging active participation in national development. As Nigeria reflects on its journey over the past 66 years, the agency's message serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility that all citizens share in shaping the future of the nation.
