In a recent statement, human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju urged Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo to bolster community policing initiatives as part of the ongoing fight against kidnapping and criminal activities in the state. Adeyanju emphasized the importance of enhancing the state's security framework to effectively combat these pressing issues.

Adeyanju commended Governor Okpebholo for his proactive measures in addressing insecurity, particularly noting the identification and prosecution of suspected kidnappers, as well as the demolition of properties linked to criminal activities. He remarked that these actions send a clear message that violence and crime will not be tolerated in Edo State.

However, Adeyanju did not shy away from criticizing the governor's overall governance, describing it as a failure. He stated, "While I have consistently criticised the Edo State Governor and remain opposed to his failed governance style, I must commend his firm stance and the steps his administration has taken in the fight against kidnapping in Edo State."

The lawyer called on the governor to intensify efforts in the battle against crime, particularly by strengthening preventive measures throughout the state. He suggested that community policing should be fully utilized, with an emphasis on enhancing security structures at the ward and local government levels. This, he argued, would empower communities to provide timely intelligence and support in preventing kidnappings before they occur.

Adeyanju's call comes at a time when the issue of insecurity has become a major concern for residents of Edo State, with kidnappings and other violent crimes on the rise. By advocating for community involvement in policing, he hopes to foster a collaborative approach to security that could lead to a significant reduction in crime rates.

As the state grapples with these challenges, the effectiveness of community policing could play a pivotal role in restoring safety and confidence among the populace. Adeyanju's remarks highlight the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy that not only addresses the symptoms of crime but also tackles its root causes through community engagement and proactive measures.
