Deacon Chris Iyovwaye, the governorship candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Delta State, has called for a significant transformation in the state, urging residents to seek independence from poverty, unemployment, and ineffective leadership. His remarks were made during an Independence Day address, where he emphasized the need for a collective effort to reset Delta ahead of the upcoming 2027 elections.

Iyovwaye reflected on Nigeria’s 66 years of independence, questioning whether citizens have truly achieved freedom from hunger and insecurity. He stated, "A man who cannot feed his family is not independent," highlighting the dire conditions many families face in the state. He expressed concern over the lack of job opportunities for graduates and the inadequate healthcare facilities available to mothers and their children.

The candidate pointed out that despite Delta's wealth in natural resources, including crude oil and fertile land, the benefits have not translated into improved living conditions for its people. "We see a rich state, but our people are poor. We see a state that has received more money than many African countries, but our schools are dilapidated," he lamented.

Iyovwaye noted the alarming trend of young Deltans leaving the state in search of better opportunities, stating that the youth from various ethnic groups, including the Urhobo, Itsekiri, Ijaw, Anioma, and Isoko, are fleeing due to a lack of prospects at home. He emphasized the urgency of his proposed "RESET" agenda, which aims to change the mindset of residents and diversify the state's economy.

He criticized the state's over-reliance on federal allocations, calling it a sign of laziness. "Delta State should not be waiting for federal allocation to survive. How can a state with a port in Warri and Koko be waiting for Abuja every month?" he questioned. Iyovwaye pledged to focus on industrialization, converting gas to power, and supporting mechanized farming to create more job opportunities for the youth.

In addition to economic reforms, Iyovwaye promised to enhance the transparency of government operations. He stated that his administration would ensure that every expenditure is accounted for, eliminating hidden budgets and inflated contracts. "Our RESET will restore dignity to our institutions. We will run a transparent government where every kobo spent will be published," he assured.

Iyovwaye called on Deltans to unite against tribal politics and poor governance, urging them to declare their independence from these issues. "Let us use this Independence Day to declare our own independence from bad governance and poverty of the mind," he urged. He concluded by wishing the people of Delta a happy Independence Day and encouraging them to envision a "new Delta" by 2027.
